In Loving Memory

George Daniel Murphy Jr, loving husband to Leslie, loving father to Mark and Danny, loving son to Lois, and loving grandfather to Roman, Gabriel, and Jack, passed away on the evening of Monday, November 2nd, surrounded by his family at the age of 66.

This website is a memorial dedicated to “Dan the floor man” for family members and friends to share memories, pictures, and stories of Dan Murphy, my dad.

Dan was born on April 29, 1954 to Lois and George Daniel Murphy Sr. Both of his parents were in the military, and Dan spent his early years in England, Germany, and South Africa before his parents moved the family back to the US. They moved to Clinton, MD in Prince George’s County, where he grew up alongside his younger sisters Melissa, Michelle, and Sheryl. He graduated from Surratsville High School, and in 1978 he started his own Commercial flooring company, Daniels Floorcovering.

On March 12, 1981, he married Leslie Murphy.

On September 30, 1981, Dan and Leslie gave birth to their oldest son, George Daniel Murphy III, “little Danny”.

On April 19, 1984, Dan and Leslie gave birth to their second son, Mark.

The family of 4 grew up in Clinton, MD in a small and humble home near Andrew’s Air Force Base.

Dan ran his commercial flooring company until 2020, putting his two kids through Catholic school at St John’s in Clinton, MD, as well as DeMatha Catholic High school, where both sons played soccer.

In addition to being a dedicated father and husband, Dan also earned the respect of the local soccer community, serving as Mark and Danny’s head soccer coach for a number of years.

Dan helped his wife, Leslie, open her own gym in Clinton, MD while the boys were in middle school. He bought some old gym equipment, painted and reupholstered all of the machines, and Leslie’s Gym opened next to St John’s Church off of Piscataway Road. The gym later expanded to the old Clinton Post Office on Piscataway Road.

Once Danny and Mark left home, Dan and Leslie relocated to Chesapeake Beach, MD in Calvert County. They resided in Breezy Point, where Dan was able to pursue his lifelong hobby of fishing and fixing up old fishing boats. He was also known as the neighborhood handyman, quick to lend a hand to any of his neighbors in need.

He could be seen frequently walking around the neighborhood with his dog and best friend, Daisy.

Dan’s son Mark and his wife Megan, after getting married on November 7 2015, gave birth to three sons: Roman Daniel (named after his grandpa), Gabriel, and Jack. Dan was a loving Grandfather, involved in all three boys’ lives and routinely having them over at their house in Breezy Point.

In late August of 2020, at the age of 66, Dan was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. He fought a noble battle for 2 months, but unfortunately the cancer was too advanced for medical professionals to find a treatment. He passed away at CalvertHealth Medical Center with his wife Leslie, sons Danny and Mark, and sister-in-law Megan by his bedside. He is survived by Leslie, Danny and Mark, his mother Lois, and his grandsons Roman, Gabriel, and Jack.

In wake of Covid-19, there will not be a funeral. My father will be cremated, and the family will have a small memorial service for family and friends. I would invite anyone who knew my dad to comment below with stories, pictures, memories that you may have of my father, so that his grandsons can look back on this site one day and see what a great man their Grandfather was.

  1. Everyone loved Dan. He was a friend to everyone and would help anyone who needed help (including me who forgets to get gas). Twice he brought over 5 gallons of gas because I had run out. ‍♀️
I was always thrilled when I referred him to my clients and they loved him. They always said ‘Dan the floor man is the nicest guy, I couldn’t imagine using anyone else’
When Dan was diagnosed, all our neighbors wanted to know how they could help.
He loved his family, totally adored Leslie and was very proud of his sons and being a grandfather was the best.
Although Dan is gone, he will always be remembered in Breezy Point. He’s a legend. He will be missed by so many.

  2. Dan always made me smile. I looked forward to him walking by my house each day. He would stop and we would chat about all kinds of things. When he found out that I was a former college soccer coach, he and I would talk about soccer and coaching. He was a man who always spread joy. His smile was contagious and his humor was excellent. Breezy Point has lost our unofficial “Mayor” and there will always be a hole in our hearts.
